Camphor ● Kafur

Camphor is a naturally sourced perfumed substance.

The many benefits of camphor include:

Umm ‘Aṭiya ( رضي الله عنها) narrated: “After the death of the Prophets daughter, he came and advised us togive the final washing to her three or five times, mixed with cedar leaves, if we wished, and then sprinkle camphor”

 The substance camphor-Kāfūr (said to be used in funeral rites) mentioned in the above and other aḥadith, is actually the name of Itar-e-Hinna (perfume of Lawsonia inermis) and correct pronunciation Kāfūr is Qafūr.

It has been reported recently that the word kāfūr in this ḥadith refers to the perfume henna from Egyptian privet and not to camphor as generally believed.

Symbolically, camphor represents a fountain in the realm of bliss. Cool and refreshing, it is given as a soothing tonic in Eastern medicine. Camphor is a seasoning added to the cup of pure wine.it causes no intoxication but is wholesome, agreeable and refreshing.

Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) mentions camphor in the Qurān, surah Insān:  “Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kāfūr”
